Topic: Wise Living
The wisdom literature in Proverbs echoes this truth, urging us to seek and live by divine wisdom. Proverbs 15:23-33 reveals that wise words and decisions produce joy, peace, and stability, while foolishness leads to regret and destruction. As James 1:5 encourages, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” When we turn to God for guidance, we open ourselves to the fruit of wise living: patience, kindness, and a life that reflects His love. In a world desperate for stability and hope, embracing divine wisdom is the key to bearing lasting fruit and living meaningfully each day.
The fruit of wise living is…
1. Joyful speech.
The Bible teaches us that one of the fruits of living wisely is joyful speech- Words that uplift, encourage, and bring life to others. Proverbs 15:23 declares, "How good is a timely word," emphasizing the importance of speaking at the right moment. When our words are filled with wisdom and kindness, they reflect divine principles rooted in God's love. As James 3:17 describes wisdom from above as "peace-loving, considerate, full of mercy and good fruit," our speech becomes a tangible expression of our transformed hearts. Jesus himself exemplified this when He spoke words of compassion, truth, and hope, turning despair into joy and darkness into light.
2. Spiritual growth.
Spiritual growth is a deepening relationship with God that transforms our hearts and actions. Proverbs 15:29 reminds us, "The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous," emphasizing that living wisely aligns us with God's will and opens the channels of divine communication. When we heed correction and seek understanding, we cultivate humility and obedience, essential for spiritual maturity. As Saint Augustine famously said, "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe," highlighting that spiritual growth often involves trusting God beyond our immediate understanding, leading us closer to Christlikeness.
3. Reverence and humility.
Reverence for God, often described as "the fear of the Lord," is the foundation of true wisdom. Proverbs 15:33 reminds us that "The fear of the Lord teaches wisdom," emphasizing that recognizing God's majesty and sovereignty cultivates humility within us. This reverence humbles our hearts, shifting our focus from self-glorification to awe-filled dependence on God. Jesus Himself exemplified this perfect humility and reverence, submitting fully to God's will, even unto death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). As followers of Christ, cultivating a heart of reverence keeps us grounded and open to divine wisdom, which naturally leads to humility.
I challenge you today: are you willing to intentionally pursue wisdom in your daily decisions and words? Will you seek God's guidance before speaking or acting, knowing that “the fear of the Lord teaches a person wisdom” (Proverbs 15:33)?
See you Sunday,
