Topic: Examine Yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5-11)
In the final chapter of 2 Corinthians, Paul prays that the church would be complete, meaning that the church would be spiritually mature and growing in Christ. Growing churches are open to self-examination or tests to ensure proper spiritual growth is taking place.
Paul asks a series of test questions to be used as a spiritual growth self-exam.
2 Corinthians 13:1-4 - What is your attitude concerning sin?
Paul had already been to Corinth twice and was preparing for a third visit. He had already warned them about their attitude towards sin; and was letting them know that he was going to deal with them harshly at his next visit. There were many who were not changing their sinful living; and instead of changing, they said that Jesus was not really speaking through Paul. How do you deal with sin? When God convicts you of your sinfulness do you repent or do you blame someone else? Many just want to shoot the messenger instead of taking the self-examination test.
What is your attitude concerning sin?
2 Corinthians 13:5-6 - Are you saved?
Each Christian should examine their life often. If you are living in a way that is not pleasing to God, you have either forgotten about the fact that God lives within you through the Holy Spirit, or you are not saved. Only you and God know if you are saved. Do you consider your salvation with fear and trembling? It is a dangerous thing to take your salvation lightly. Don’t play “Russian Roulette” with your salvation. Are you sure?
2 Corinthians 13:7-10 - Do you desire to live a fully restored life in Jesus?
Is it possible to live a sinless life? No, but through Christ you and I can sin less and choose to live in obedience and submission to the Holy Spirit who desires to live through us. Thank God that we can confess our sins to God, and He forgives us of all unrighteousness. Not only are we not to sin; but we are to help one another. Paul wanted to build them up and not tear them down. I pray to do the same.
2 Corinthians 13:11 - Are you Christ-minded?
Paul says that we need to rejoice, strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind in Christ, and live in peace. Being Christ minded will bring unity and peace to your life.
How did you do on the test?
See you Sunday,
